About me
Looking for information about the artist? Look no further. I am Lumberjack Choirboy. I was brought up on a waxy diet of Crayola crayons in Blackpool and moved to Manchester in 2001 to study Fine Art at university and I have lived here ever since.
When I left university, I spent a bit of time scribbling and scrambling just trying to find the right direction to go and how best to output the things and ideas in my bald head that I wanted to draw and make. I started off designing artwork for legendary Mancunian institution, South Nightclub, fusing madcap, offbeat imagery with the club’s dive bar aesthetic to promote and advertise a diverse range of events. It was hear that I learned my chops on a rusty version of Photoshop 7.

Following my time at the club I created artwork for local bands and a range of promotional material for venues. These included album and single artwork for the Manchester band ‘its a buffalo’ and flyers and posters for ‘Quizimodo’ at the family of Odd Bars across Manchester.

I tried my hand at illustrating a children’s book for a charity next. Successfully launching a book for EDS UK, who help support anybody touched and affected by Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. The book is called Ezra’s Extraordinary Stripes and features my hand drawn illustrations throughout. You can find out more about the great work that EDS UK do and also buy copies of my book from their online shop.

Next I tried to build up my process for making art and to establish myself with a unique and recognisable style. Inspired by street art, pattern, cartoons and symbols, I set about working out a system of icons/images/doodles/symbols to create patterns on canvas… tiles… walls… post-it notes. Whatever I had at my disposal! I designed hundreds of hand drawn stickers and slapped them up all over any cities I would travel too to spread my work and ideas as far and wide as I could. I spent some time creating large scale murals in shop windows including the 2 Pie Minister stores in Manchester to celebrate British Pie Week.
